Depromo the first DC in the domain

Dear All,

We are planning to retire the first DC running Windows 2003 Standard Edition
in our domain.  I have already installed a new Windows 2003 Std Edition and
joined the same Domain.  Replication is working fine.

I want to know if it is just a matter of depromoting the old server that all
the Operations Master will be transferred to the new server.  Or do I have
to manually transfer all the Operations Master before depromoting the old
one?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Tony

Ideally you should manually transfer the roles to the new DC and also ensure
that any and all other services being offered by that old DC are covered on
existing or new machines such as GC, DNS, DHCP,WINS etc etc etc
(I assume you are running more then one DC in this domain)

to keep the control where the roles are going to (especially with multiple
Domain controllers), you should transfer the FSMO manually, but dcpromo
would also take care about it, as long as there is another Domain controller
in the forrest reachable. And also not forget other special services, which
may be hosted by the retired machine, like DNS, Distributed File System and
similar.
You can also take a look to the KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504
"Using Ntdsutil.exe to transfer or seize FSMO roles to a domain controller"
which contains a description of the various methods of transfering FSMO
roles.

FSMOs *should* automatically migrate when you DCPROMO. However, I would move
them manually just to be safe. Also, if you have multiple DCs, you will
probably want to decide where the FSMOs are located.

From what I know, any other services (DNS, DHCP, etc.) will have to be set
up on the new DC before you DCPROMO the old one.

My process would be (after you think everything is set up properly) to take
the old DC off-line and run without it for a while. After a few days (don't
let it exceed the tombstone period), then bring it back on line, let it
replicate (probably not necessary) and then DCPROMO it. If it is being
de-commisioned, take it out of the domain.

Moving manually might be of no use. The roles might just move back
automatically.

If you manually move the roles off a server about to be decommissioned to
another server they will NOT just move back any where.
Operations Master transfer only occurs either manually, through a none
cooperative seizure or if you dcpromo a machine out that is holding a role.
