"Ghost" GPOI have a number of machines on my network that are having difficulty keeping
local installations of Office 2003 on them. An inspection of a machine's settings with Group Policy Management shows an existing Software Installation policy for Office, but this policy is in a GPO that no longer exists (the "Winning GPO" lists a GUID and the domain name, the GPO doesn't appear in the Group Policy Management console, and I can't find the GUID anywhere in either machine's registry). How do I delete this "Ghost" GPO so that it stops interfering with Office installations and anything else it might be affecting? Hi,
The GPO's are physically stored in the SYSVOL\domain.com\Group Policy Folder on all the DC's (replicated). If you know the GUID and know for sure that it is the "bad" one then you can delete it there. This may be a different issue though. GP's don't apply unless the objects are within the OU that the GP is on. If the GP is not linked to the OU it won't apply. They may have ticked "uninstall software when it falls out of scope of this GP" which means that IF the GPO doesn't exist then the software is uninstalled. Best bet is to create another Software Package for Office 2003 to reinstall and make sure the above isn't ticked.
