Dell SC 420 server And when I was adding a UPS backup system today, I set something wrong in my system power settings, got a blue screen of death, and now, all I can do is, 'windows is booting', getting to the alt-ctl-del for about a second, then 'windows is shutting down' shuts down and turns off... at least its not re-booting over and over... anyways, how can I get in and get my settings right? Been to BIOS Settings and did all I could do there, I think.... Only other thing I can think of is adding an external USB HD and boot from it??? after turning off the 2 other internal drives (make them non-bootable) Tell me there is an easier way... I do have an external usb drive case here... somewhere... ha ha.. Not sure what to boot the system up with now either after adding the SP1.. seems the system doesnt like the original set up disks anymore, but havent really tried booting with the SP1 disks I got in the mail.. So, after all these options I have, which one should work? 1. mess with the bios some more? 2. turn off boot from HD and boot from a CD 3. switch the cables and make drive 0 to 1 and 1 to 0 4. format the drive and re-install 5. get a new hobby.. Thanks. Have you tried safe mode? - Press F8 after the post screen.
Did you load any software for the UPS? If yes, remove it and see if the issue is resolved. But, I fixed it... Booting from the CD with disk 1 in the drive, I chose 'R' for recover, and finally got to c:\windows, but soon found out I could go no further than c:\ and was still unable to delete the software that came with the UPS... So, checking the commands I could use was a LISTSVC (list services) and low and behold, there it was, "UPS" was listed as a service. Three of them... 2 manual, and 1 auto. I then entered DISABLE UPS at the c:\windows prompt, and re-booted, and have lived to tell about it... Problem Solved, and I learned something new today!
