upgrade Workgroup to Windows 2003 server.I have network with 3 workgroups and thier workstation have several shared
interconnected. Note: that all the workstation have been upgraded to Win2K Pro and XP Pro. I have purchased Win3K server and installed it on this network. It is presently my DHCP server, Server Printer, and my File Server. There approximately 6 shares on this server that the workgroups connect to. I am trying to convert this server now to my domain server by DCPROMO. Once I do this my shares are gone I no longer have connection to the work groups. I understand from MS knowledge base that I need to recreate the shares on this server once I complete domain. My question is about the workgroups and workstation, do i need to recreate the shares and workgroup as well to have them see the new domain server? Is there any documentation about upgrading workgroups to Windows 2003 server? There is not much point in having a domain controller unless you are going
to join your workstations to the domain - thereby eliminating the workgroups. With Active Directory you could place groups of computers in different Organizational Units so that you can apply different policies to them. Perhaps that's what you have in mind? Its a little unclear what your trying to accomplish. Adding a domain
controller should not effect the workgroups. Workgroups don't have shares, the machines in them have shares. If there are existing shares in a workgroup, that shouldn't change. As for shares on the DC, you will now have users from the domain accessing them. You should set the permissions to allow the domain users rights to them. You will need to create users in the domain. The clients (XP and w2k pro) should also be joined to the domain. A machine can not be a member of a domain and a workgroup at the same time. That does not mean however, they can't access resources in an existing workgroup. I know I didn't explain this very well, but this is a process that really can't be explained in a few sentences. You create a domain. add users to the domain add computers to the domain users log on from those machine to the domain. then you create resources in the domain set permissions on them users gain access based on their rights set above. -- Show quoteHide quoteHope it helps........... dw Don Wilwol Blog - http://spaces.msn.com/members/wilwol/ Web - http://capital.net/~wilwol/dw.htm DonWilwol(REMO***@yahoo.com "emgdos" <emg***@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:1658AA43-B0EB-4BF4-9F4F-D1F13B7E8693@microsoft.com... >I have network with 3 workgroups and thier workstation have several shared > interconnected.
