My network connection continuously alternates between saying it is unplugged
and local area connection is now connected.  What is causing this?  It began
when I set up the pc to log a person into the domain running Windows Server
2003.  Even when I unplug all the network connections in the router except
this one it continues to have the problem.

It's happened to me before too. It was a bad wire. It could be other issues
too, such as a bad switch port. You'll have to try to diagnose it further.

What else have you done to diagnose it? Swap switch ports? Wall ports?
Wires? Anything in the event logs? Test the wires with a patch tester? How
about the line from the wall patch to the switch?

You posted this to numerous groups. Do you feel they were all relevant to
this issue?

I had this problem a few months ago when setting up some new machines,
and it seemed to be a Windows problem.  I can't tell you any neat
solution, except that when I reinstalled Windows on one of the affected
machines, the problem went away.  I re-imaged the rest of the machines
with a Ghost image from the first fixed machine, and all recovered.
This isn't a fix that is convenient, I understand, but perhaps you
could use System Restore to go back to before changing the log on?
Hopefully a more knowledgeable person can tell why this should happen.
I'm just a hardware tech.  I found that reinstalling the NIC drivers
didn't help, but putting in a new NIC did.  It could be that that is
easier than reinstalling Windows.

Could be a speed and duplex mismatch. Under the configuration of your NIC, go
to Advanced and change the Link Speed and Duplex to 100 MB Full Duplex. If
that doesn't work, try 10 MB Full Duplex.
