In place repair consideratinos for R2

My primary domain controller, which is running R2 Ent. Edition, can't boot into Windows anymore using any of the F8 menu items.  The machine is the primary server for Active Directory, DFS, DNS, Certs, and Exchange.  I have a backup domain controller currently running but unfortunately it doesn't have the DFS roots replicated on it nor does it have Exchagne.  What are the ramifications of doing an in place repair of Windows?  Is there anything special that I need to know given that this is running R2?  Are there other, safer, methods of troubleshooting this server that I can take before trying the in place repair?  I realize these are very general questions so any input or help would be GREATLY appreciated.  I don't wish to go down an irreversible path essentially flying blind here when I don't even really have the foggiest idea what problems I'm up against.

Thanks.
