System State Backup Fails Post SP1 Server 2003server 2003 SP1. Scheduled NTbackup task begins properly using administrator account which is a member of the backup ops group. If backing up to tape it will mount the media and begin processing files. If backing up to a file it will begin processing files. After volume backups are complete the application attempts to back up system state. System state backup looks as if there are not going to be any issues until it gets to "Processing Active Directory". At this point the application and server stops responding. I cannot open the task manager to look at processes. My only option is to hard boot the server. Since this is a new server I decided to cut my losses and try formating the Disk and re-installing windows. My Server 2003 CD is Pre SP1. After installation of o.s., drivers, and active directory, all is well. Server will run system state backups to both the tape and to file. This time I downloaded SP1 without using windows update. Installed with no errors. All is well except machine stops responding "processing active directory" during the system state backup. Please Help I have the exact same problem on 1 of my sites and Microsoft seems to have no
answer for it. It happened when service pack 1 was released. To get around the problem do backups with shadow copy turned off and backup AD on another server. Things that have been suggested are turn off write cache on RAID controllers. Hot fix for shadow copy http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=884055 None of them worked for me.
