Adding a new (additional) domain controller

Hi,

we have 2 domain controllers - called pkcore and pkserv1.

pkcore has all the (5) fsmo roles. I am trying to upgrade pkserv1 as we are
running short on space on the C (system drive).

Would it be a good strategy to install windows 2003 on a new server called
DC1 and dcpromo it.

Then can I retire pkserv1 by demoting it.

Thanks

Yes, because windows 2000 runs out of support.

But before doing it, you have to move the 5 FSMO roles to one of the other
DC's. Also you should make additionl DC's to Global catalog servers and DNS
servers.

Hi,

The operating system on both servers is windows 2003 sp2.

The 5 FSMO roles are on pkcore. I am planning to replace/remove pkserv1.

Pkserv1 also serves as a secondary DNS - so I need to install DNS on DC2
(which is the new server that we are migrating to).

Thanks

Very simple Sanjay. Because the FSMO roles reside on the pkcore all that is
necessary is to bring the new w2k3 server online and dcpromo as a DC and
secondary dns server. Then dcpromo the pkserv1 out of the domain.

Sounds good. Since all the FSMOs are on pkcore, you can go ahead  with
it. I would also make sure that DC1 has DNS, DHCP (if you use it) and
make it a Global Catalog server. If you add DHCP, make sure you split
the scopes between pkcore and DC1.

This will give you redundancy and allow logons to continue if pkcore
goes off line

Hi,

If I go to AD Sites and Services -> Sites -> Default-First-Site-Name ->
Servers ->pkcore

and

AD Sites and Services -> Sites -> Default-First-Site-Name -> Servers ->pkserv1

I find that both servers are Global Catalog servers. Also we only have 1
domain, 1 site and are running Exchange 2003.

Am I correct to conclude that once I have made DC1 a domain controller,
installed DNS, then I need to 'check' and make it a GC server.

And to uncheck pkserv1 - so that it is no longer a GC server?

Thanks
