Unable to explore local C:\ Drive

When I try to explore the C:\drive on a Server 2003 it hangs for a bit and
then gives me the folowing msg:-

These files are Hidden.
This folder contains files that keep your system working properly.
You should not modify its content.

No Chnages has been made except for Microsoft Automatic updates.
I can explore other drives but just not the C:\drive.  Does anyone have any
ideas or suggestions on why this is happening?

Any advice is appreciated.

It doesn't do anything, still showing the torch.  It will let me explore
other drives and just not the C:\ drive.  I have even tried going into folder
options and select do not show hidden files still it won't let me explore
c:\drive.

Thanks

I have also unchecked the "Hide protected operating system files" it is still
coming up with the same error.  It is the torch that displays when it is
trying to search for files and folders.

Thanks Dave for your help but I still can't explore C:\ Drive. I have tried
installing a new Malware Cleaner and while doing a scan in freezed on me and
needs to reboot.  After rebooting the 2003 server it took about 20 minutes to
come up.  Any ideas? Is there such thing as a restore point for server 2003?

Even when I tried logon as a different user, I still get the same error and
cause the server to hang for about 15 minutes when i try exploring C:\drive.

As per Andrew's advise for the cacls command, this is the output:-

BUILTIN\Administrators:F
BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)IO)F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)IO)F
CREATOR OWNER:(OI)(CI)IO)F
BUILTIN\Users:R
BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)IO)(special access:)
                                      GENERIC_READ
                                      GENERIC_EXECUTE

BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(special access:)
                            FILE_APPEND_DATA

BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(IO)(special access:)
                                 FILE_WRITE_DATA

Everyone:R

It doesn't sound quite like a permissions problem, but if you log in as the
Administrator can you see the files?

If not, start a command prompt and enter the command

cacls \

the output of which should include at least

BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)F

which means administrators and the system have full control. If it doesn't,
then please report back and hopefully someone will help you with the syntax
for cacls to add them (you definitely want the /E option).

Andrew,

BUILTIN\Administrators:F
BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)IO)F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)IO)F
CREATOR OWNER:(OI)(CI)IO)F
BUILTIN\Users:R
BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)IO)(special access:)
                                      GENERIC_READ
                                      GENERIC_EXECUTE

BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(special access:)
                            FILE_APPEND_DATA

BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(IO)(special access:)
                                 FILE_WRITE_DATA

When I try to do a virus scan on it for Malware the system crashes at a
certain stage and will not go on any further.  Could this be some sort of
virus or malware in the system?
